In 1891, Dr. James Naismith introduced the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. The game consisted of a soccer ball and two peach baskets, with 13 original rules. After initial disinterest, the game quickly gained traction and became one of the premier sports of the Midwest. In 1898, the inventor of the sport became the first Head Basketball Coach for the University of Kansas. Throughout the years, Kansas has been a major hub for the sport and is known by many as "The Basketball State".
