Missouri Western State University is known for many things, but arguably, the most recognizable aspect of Missouri Western is its mascot; the Griffon. The Griffon was established as the face of Western in 1917 when the school was still holding classes in the Central High School building to save costs. The reason Western chose the griffon was because of a student at the time, Norman Knight, who suggested that the mythological beast best represented the university's message. Today, the Griffon can be seen as the university's official logo and is in the shape of the state of Missouri!
